Curleys Heroes - Archive Page
Well. It all started as a bit of a laugh and has ended up being a lot of fun. We decided to get the band back together for a one off gig at the local pub playing all the old cover versions we used to do in the late 70's. So there we were, all original members. Ace songwriter Martin Craven, that illustrious golfing Scotsman and solo performer Paul Dobie, actor extraordinaire Johnny Moran (aka Josh Moran), media mogul John Bentham, and of course the very legendary Brian Curley. The story so far is we made a good start and went through all the old stuff during Summer 1997. I went off to Japan with One Way System for a month and returned to find a dozen original songs on the table. So off we went with a 90 minute set, 70% original material, and did 3 gigs in local pubs before Xmas. Next thing we know, Johnny is off touring Richard III with Northern Broadsides for 3 months and we're drummerless. Anyway he came back and we did our first gig for a while at The Vic in St.Annes in March 98. Here are 3 of the songs in 16k RealAudio5 streams John Bentham March 1998

"Well.
It did'nt take long to get here then, did it lads"
quipped Martin as Curleys Heroes entered a
recording studio, almost a full 20 years since
the band first formed. Just why we were doing it
was'nt fully apparent. I guess we just like the
songs!
So 6 songs were recorded and have been burnt onto
CD. They do seem to have gone down ok. We'll be
selling them for £5 at gigs whenever we can.

November 1998 saw quite a special event being staged at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool. Johnnys Party sprang out of an idea for Johnnys 40th and will now go down in the annals! January 1998 - latest news is that Paul Dobie has stepped down to allow the band to concentrate a bit more on operating as a unit. Pauls work commitments as a solo performer, were limiting the nights of the week gigs could be done. And so off we go again...as a four piece for the moment... Johnnys back, Martins back, we've made it to the new millennium so who knows what could happen - JB 12/01/00 Well theres no been much on the gig front happening of late. Martin is working in Leeds at the moment and Johnny is off touring 'King Leah' around the UK with Northern Broadsides. However. in anticipation of this gap we did venture into the studio again and recorded 4 new songs (Down, Self Worth, Aint No Love & Free)and mixed 3 older live ones (Phoenix Arizona, I Killed The King & Johnny Was A Motorbike Rider)- JB 20/9/99
